Milford Sound TripWe delight in showing visitors the special places that make our South Island one of the most spectacularly beautiful destinations in the world. Walking or trekking won't always get you where you want to go however, so we invite you to join us in these adventures designed to show the beauty of New Zealand from a different and exciting point of view. Milford Sound Cruise Located deep in the heart of a World Heritage Area, Milford Sound is an overwhelming place. You can feel the power of nature here - the remoteness, the wildness and the peace. The fiords were formed during the ice ages of millennia past and are surrounded by deep rainforests, sheer cliffs, and falling cascades of water. Beneath the water lie colourful coral reefs and their denizens, while above Milford Sound rises mile-high Mitre Peak. Milford Sound runs 15 kilometres inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1200 metres or more on either side. Among the peaks are The Elephant at 1517 m (4977 ft), said to resemble an elephant's head, and Lion Mountain, 1302 m (4271 ft), in the shape of a crouching lion. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs, while seals, penguins, and dolphins frequent the waters. With a mean annual rainfall of 6813 mm on 182 days a year, a high level even for the West Coast, Milford Sound is known as the wettest place in New Zealand and one of the wettest in the world. Whatever the fiord‚s mood, teeming with rain or with sun glistening on deep water, it will inspire you. Nowhere in Fiordland do the mountains stand as tall, straight out of the sea. In the foreground stands Mitre Peak, a remarkable presence dominating the skyline. The round-trip coach excursion to Fiordland and the boat trips are included in the NZT itinerary.
